About this Course

The Nile is one of the major international rivers of the world and is shared by 11 countries in East and North Africa. The Nile River Basin has been characterised by many things, including water scarcity, rapid population growth, widespread poverty and conflict over control of the Nile waters. Climate change adds to this. The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is a major regional undertaking towards strengthening basin-wide resilience to climate change and ensuring climate compatible water resource management and development, stated in its Climate Change strategy.
The NBI Climate Proofing Course introduces to instruments and methodologies for the climate proofing of infrastructure investments along the investment cycle. The course offers guidance on to overcome governance challenges for climate change and covers themes from policy formulation to project identification, preparation, resource mobilization, construction and the operation and maintenance of new and existing infrastructure. At the end of the course, you will have improved your understanding of the mechanisms of climate proofing processes and tools. Furthermore, you will be able to use and interpret climate information, organise stakeholder involvement and understand approaches towards risk assessment and risk treatment. You will also learn where and how climate proofing in the investment process needs to be anchored for the development of bankable and resilient infrastructure investments projects.

The course targets nationals of Nile countries involved in the formulation of water resource management policies, as well as public and private stakeholders involved in project development, design and operation, such as planners, engineers, technical and managerial staff being responsible for operating infrastructures. Moreover, climatologists and climate proofing process facilitators, and high-level decision-makers are addressed.
The course is designed to equip participants with the necessary background knowledge to enable them to either take leadership in guiding and participate effectively in Climate Proofing processes or discussions.
The course may also be of interest to staff of donor agencies active in the Nile region; academics and students of transboundary water management; professionals working in the areas of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), transboundary river basin management, environmental resources management, international water law and diplomacy, and conflict management; and people of all walks of life, residing within the basin or other parts of the world, who have a curiosity about understanding what it takes to arrive at climate resilient water related infrastructure.

Requirements

We recommend that you have basic knowledge of geography, infrastructure project development, including the development of feasibility studies for infrastructure projects, engineering & design, as well as natural resources management and water management. You also need to have basic computer skills to be able to launch and view multi-media instruction materials, download and read course notes, and participate in a discussion platform.
