The NBI Hydromet Monitoring course introduces the key elements for the implementation and operation of the hydrologic monitoring program. It includes Learning Units on civil works, monitoring equipment, operation and maintenance, and communications. Additional modules are planned, including real-time data transmission, data management and quality control, basic hydraulics, and rating curve development.

About this Course

The course targets national staff in hydrologic service agencies of the Nile countries and staff at NBI involved in the implementation and operation of the Regional Hydrometric Monitoring Network and associated data and information management systems.

The course is designed to equip participants with the necessary background knowledge to enable them to support current and future implementation activities, to maintain the installed monitoring stations, and to operate the system, integrating it with their own national hydrometric monitoring programs.

The course targets nationals of Nile countries involved in the formulation of water resource management policies, as well as public and private stakeholders involved in project development, design and operation, such as planners, engineers, technical and managerial staff being responsible for operating infrastructures.

Requirements

We recommend that you have basic knowledge of hydrologic monitoring and data processing. Basic familiarity with construction techniques will be helpful in thoroughly appreciating the sections on civil works. You need to have basic computer skills to be able to launch and view multi-media instruction materials and download and read course notes.

Dr Mohsen Alarabawy, NBI Project Coordinator

Dr Alarabawy is a professional water resources expert with more than 25 years of practical experience in all water resources planning, management, and development-related fields. His proven experience covers a wide range of water resources topics and themes, including transboundary water resources issues and challenges, policy instruments, legal and institutional frameworks, safeguards and standard procedures, conflict mitigation and resolution, arbitration and negotiation, outreach and advocacy, communication, and stakeholder engagement. He is familiar with developing and employing transboundary water resources strategic assessments, development of water resources atlases, river basin "hydromet" monitoring, and Decision Support System as well as knowledge portals and employing them as a means of informing and enriching the riparian dialogue.

Russell Boals, Monitoring Expert

Mr Boals is an International Water Resources Consultant with nearly five decades of experience. He provides hydrometeorological consulting services and project management services including procurement leadership on international water resources assessment, hydrometeorological monitoring projects, and hydrometeorological information projects worldwide. Essential to these assignments is the development and participation in institutional capacity strengthening in related topics, including monitoring network implementation, Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), early warning systems for flood and drought management, and transboundary water management.

Mark Woodbury, Consultant Team Leader

Mr Woodbury is a recognized international water resources consultant with three decades of experience in hydrologic and hydraulic monitoring, modelling, and forecasting, including reservoir simulation and operations. He has designed and implemented river forecasting and decision support systems throughout the world; led multi-disciplinary teams in establishing flood risk maps and developing mapping capability in Africa; facilitated stakeholder consultation workshops for multi-national collaboration in transboundary water resources management in the Nile River Basin; and developed and delivered training in operational hydrology around the world

Which language will be used?

English is the language used in multi-media instructional materials, for communication between trainees and moderators and in discussions on the discussion platform.

Are there plans to develop courses in other languages such as French and Arabic?

In the medium to long term and based on feedback on the English course, the NBI may consider translation of the English course to other major languages used in the Nile region.

Who is eligible to participate in the course?

Admission is open to anybody interested in the course, but priority will be given to citizens of the Nile riparian countries and to people involved in the Nile cooperation process.

Do I have to pay to take the course?

The course will be free of charge to persons admitted to the course.

What is the benefit for me if I do the course?

It will help you understand and appreciate transboundary challenges and opportunities in the cooperative basin management.

What are the requirements for admission to the course?

Applicants must preferably be citizens of the Nile riparian countries or involved in promoting Nile cooperation. Applicants must also have attained a basin level of education (secondary school level) and have basic knowledge of knowledge of geography, natural resources management, water management and international water law principles. Trainees also need to have basic computer skills to be able to launch and view multi-media instruction materials, download, and read course notes, and participate in a discussion platform.

How much does the course cost?

There are no course fees for you, as it aims at strengthening capacity and deepening knowledge of transboundary water resources in the Nile Basin.

What equipment do I need to be able to participate in the online course?

Participants need a computer or mobile communication appliance such as a smart phone or tablet plus internet connectivity to be able to participate in the online course.

What materials will I receive for the course?

Participants will receive course notes in PDF format and have access to online multimedia materials.

Is a certificate awarded at the end of the course?

A Certificate of Successful Completion of the course shall be issued to participants who successfully complete the course.

What do I need to do to receive the Certificate of Successful Completion of the Course?

To be able to receive the Certificate of Successful Completion of the Course, participants must fulfil the following requirements: (a) complete the module and lessons of the course; (b) take the knowledge check quizzes of the lessons; (c) take the module exam; (d) provide feedback on the NBI Induction Course (for improvement).
You will need a minimum of 80% of the possible scores to get the certificate.

Is the NBI Hydromet Course accredited?

At present (2022) the NBI course is not accredited with any education accreditation body.

I am a university student. Can I obtain credit points from this course that I can transfer to my University Course?

Credit points are a standard measure of work load (study hours) in university courses. At present (2022), the NBI Induction Course is not linked to any regular university course. Therefore, it will not be possible to transfer credit points from this course to your university course.
